Encinitas, San Diego County
Encinitas became a city in 1986, joining the beach communities of Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea and old Encinitas with inland Olivenhain. For most of the last century its hills were covered with flower farms, and the Ecke family ranch here supplied most of the poinsettias sold in the country. The San Diego Botanic Garden, opened in 1970, keeps that horticultural tradition going.
